Library and knowledge resources

Databases are available to support evidence-based decision making, research, CPD and educational requirements.

You will need an  NHS OpenAthens  account to access these core resources; some  will only be available to Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust employees.

Other resources include image banks, clinical question answering systems, skills and procedures databases.

Databases for evidence searches

  • The Allied and Complementary Medicine Database (AMED) is a bibliographic database covering a selection of journals in complementary medicine, palliative care, and several professions allied to medicine. (Via OVID)
  • The CINAHL® database is a comprehensive and authoritative source of information for nurses, allied health professionals, and others interested in health care. Its annually updated thesaurus is adapted from the US National Library of Medicine’s Medical Subject Headings. There are over 4000 unique nursing and allied health subject headings. (Via EBSCO)
  • Embase (Excerpta Medica Database) is a biomedical and pharmacological database containing more than 30 million records including articles from more than 8,500 journals. It is especially strong in its coverage of drug and pharmaceutical research, pharmacology and toxicology. (via OVID)
  • EMCARE includes international coverage of allied health, education and training, development and management, midwifery, health and healthcare economics, clinical medical and healthcare social work, psychiatry and mental health, and traumatology, emergency and critical-care medicine. (Via OVID)
  • MEDLINE® is a bibliographic database produced by the U.S. National Library of Medicine. The database contains millions of citations, derived from thousands of biomedical and life science journals extending back to 1946. Indexed with Medical Subject Headings from the NLM controlled vocabulary. (Via OVID or EBSCO).

Point of care and decision support tools

  • DynaMed clinical decision support system comprises topic reviews updated continually, bringing together best practice and latest research. MTW employees can access via direct link from the intranet when onsite, or via NHS OpenAthens elsewhere. It is also possible to set up a DynaMed personal account for off-site access and access to the app (pre-registration via the direct intranet link is required before the app and off-site access can be used).
  • Clinical Skills.net supports the delivery of evidence-based care. Produced in the UK and based on NHS practice it is regularly updated and packed with links to key guidance. Access onsite via direct link for MTW employees on the Library Resources intranet page or OpenAthens username will be required for off-site access.
  • Clinical Key contains some 17,000+ medical and surgical videos, 300+ procedure videos and articles. All content is searchable. NHS OpenAthens username will be required. A Clinical Key app is now available - download to your phone and access with OpenAthens.
  • BMJ Best Practice takes you quickly and accurately to the latest evidence-based information. OpenAthens username will be required and an app is available.
  • MedicinesComplete from the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, is the definitive online resource for drug and healthcare information, bringing together the world’s leading resources to provide expert and unbiased knowledge in order to make the best clinical decisions on the use and administration of drugs and medicines.

We have a range of multi-disciplinary titles available as hard-copy in our libraries or via e-book platforms. If we do not have a title you need, we can usually get a copy via inter-library loan and welcome recommendations for stock. You can search via

Image banks

  • Clinical Key has 2,200,000 images from trusted books and journals. All content is searchable but an NHS OpenAthens username will be required. A Clinical Key app is now available- download to your phone and access with an OpenAthens account.
  • DermIS has a large visual atlas of dermatology images to aid diagnosis and differential diagnosis.

Revision and study support

  • BMJ Learning has more than 900 online courses updated continually to reflect latest updates and evidence, across health care and health professions. Access this resource (MTW employees) using your OpenAthens username and password
