The Pathology department adheres to the principles of patient-focused laboratory medicine, adopting a proactive stance on optimising the delivery of medical laboratory services to give maximum efficiency and effectiveness to health care.

Accreditation

Scope of UKAS accredited repertoire

  • Cellular pathology 8062 (diagnostic cytology, histology, molecular pathology and mortuary)
  • Microbiology 8063
  • Blood sciences 8342 (haematology, biochemistry, blood transfusion and phlebotomy)
  • Unaccredited tests will be highlighted on reports with a comment and are also listed in  Pathology tests outside scope of accreditation [pdf] 902KB
  • Point of care testing (POCT) services are currently outside the scope of UKAS accreditation to ISO 15189:2022. All POCT activities are managed under the Pathology Quality Management System to ensure appropriate governance and quality standards. Following assessment, progress is underway towards UKAS accreditation to ISO 15189:2022 for blood gas and co-oximetry, blood glucose and blood ketone testing.
