Pathology

Pathology is the study of disease. It is the bridge between science and medicine and underpins every aspect of patient care, from diagnostic testing and treatment advice to using cutting-edge genetic technologies and preventing disease.

Around 75% of clinical pathways rely on efficient, timely and cost-effective pathology.

The department includes Biochemistry, Blood Transfusion, Haematology, Cellular Pathology, Microbiology and Point of Care Testing (these resources are only available to MTW staff).

Our Pathology teams process over 12 million tests every year in the modern laboratories on two hospital sites.

Results and enquiries

Authorised results are available via our IT systems.

Only call the laboratory if you are unable to find the result you require.

Patients are unable to obtain results directly from the laboratory; to receive these; please contact the clinician (in the trust or the GP) who ordered the test.

See below for contacts.

Obtaining clinical advice: Rego

For advice and guidance on patient management that is not urgent, Rego may be useful.

Rego is an electronic referral system allowing clinicians to request expert clinical advice as an alternative to making a referral.

It is most commonly used by GPs, who request advice from specialists at their provider trusts.

In Pathology, requests can be made to the microbiology consultants, the haematology consultants or the biochemistry consultant.

Responses are generally within 24 hours of making the request.
