Father’s memory honoured at Maidstone Hospital

A family’s generosity has funded an intercom system on John Day Ward at Maidstone Hospital in memory of a much-loved husband and father, thanking the team who gave him “the best care possible” in his final days.

Durga Chand spent a little over a month on John Day Ward at the end of his life.

His wife, Anita and his children Dibya, Diva and Aadar said: “All the nursing staff and healthcare support workers we encountered during that time were incredible, and we cannot thank them enough for being so accommodating and understanding.

“We are especially grateful that our family was given the space, time and dignity to be with Dad in his final moments.

“We donated to John Day ward because we felt it was important to give back to the team that spent so much time with Dad, providing the best care possible towards the end of his life.”

The family’s donation to  MTW Hospitals Charity  funded a new intercom system which helps ensure patient and staff safety on the ward, allowing the nursing team to keep the ward area secure.

The new system allows them to let visitors in remotely, without having to leave the ward area to come and open the door.

Last month, the family returned to Maidstone Hospital and joined Mansiri Gurung,
Head of Nursing for Medical Specialties and Daniela Vale, Ward Manager, to see the new system in place.

They said: “It was surreal to see the new intercom in place and it means a lot to our family that the hospital has honoured his memory.

“We hope that it helps improve the hospital and ward experience for both staff and patients alike.”

Head of Charity and Fundraising, Claire Ashby said: “We are always so grateful when our local communities give back to our hospitals to say thank you for the care they and their families have received, and it is especially touching when the donation is in memory of someone close to them.
