Crowborough Birthing Centre

Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust has completed its review of what would be required to reintroduce intrapartum (birth) services at Crowborough Birthing Centre (CBC).

This work has considered staffing, service sustainability and the safe delivery of care.

We have shared this assessment with NHS Kent and Medway and NHS Sussex, who are responsible for commissioning maternity services. They will now consider this as part of their wider planning for maternity services.

While this work is ongoing, the suspension of intrapartum services at the centre remains in place.

We know this will be disappointing for people who care about this service and we recognise the strength of feeling locally. Antenatal and postnatal services continue at the centre, and women and families continue to be supported through our maternity services, including midwifery-led care at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells.

We will continue to work closely with commissioning colleagues as they consider next steps.

Maternity service at Tunbridge Wells Hospital rated ‘good’ by Care Quality Commission

In an inspection in October 2024, the CQC found “significant improvements” had been made since its previous inspection in August 2023.

This followed an extensive programme of improvement addressing areas including: management of post-partum haemorrhage; maternity triage processes; category 1 and 2 c-section waiting times; staffing ratios; and improvements in data capture and reporting.

The CQC’s new report recognises  improvements, including:

  • Strengthened oversight and management of governance
  • A positive safety culture where incidents are investigated thoroughly, and learning is embedded to promote good practice and outcomes
  • Routine monitoring of care and treatment to continuously improve outcomes for mothers and babies
  • A culture of kindness and compassion, with staff making sure people’s care, support and treatment meet individual needs and preferences
  • Improved focus on equality, diversity and inclusion, and personalised care plans based on individual needs and preferences for all women and birthing people.

Maternity Voices Partnership

The Maternity and Neonatal Voices Partnership (MNVP) brings together local parents, families, and maternity and neonatal professionals to collaboratively shape and improve services.

MNVP representatives actively gather feedback from women and families about their experiences of care before, during, and after pregnancy.

This insight is used to help influence service development, inform decision-making, and ensure maternity and neonatal services meet the needs of the local community
