What we do

Our leading gastroenterology service is provided at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells hospitals.

We are national leaders on the bowel cancer screening programme and were one of the first units in the country to extend this to the BowelScope (flexible sigmoidoscopies for patients over 55 years old).

The team offer care and advice for patients with various diseases of the upper and lower digestive systems.

These include stomach disorders such as ulcers, cancers, biliary and liver abnormalities, hernias and strictures as well as cancer of the colon, inflammatory bowel disease and irritable bowel syndrome.

At both hospitals a team of specialist nurses is available to patients who have been diagnosed with upper or lower digestive cancer. These nurses also provide continuous service to the patient throughout their treatment.

We perform upper and lower endoscopies, capsule endoscopy, enteroscopy and ERCP (endoscopic retrograde cholangio pancreotography).

This is a service provided by the IBD team for patients with ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease who have symptom flare. The service is specifically for patients under the follow up care of our team.

The advice line is an answerphone service, staffed Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm (excluding bank holidays).

The IBD clinical nurse specialists will triage your message and return your call within three working days, but usually within 24 hours.

The service is not for urgent attention – for this you should consider NHS111 or A&E
