What we do
Endometriosis is a chronic debilitating disease affecting 1 in 10 women.
It is a condition in which tissue similar to the lining inside the uterus (called the endometrium), is found outside the uterus, where it causes a chronic inflammatory reaction that may result in scar tissue.
It is mainly found on the pelvic peritoneum, on the ovaries, in the recto-vaginal septum, on the bladder and bowel.
It can have serious physical implications for those suffering from it, causing painful periods, pelvic pain, dyspareunia (painful intercourse), bowel pain and urinary problems. Endometriosis can also make it difficult to conceive.
This complex disease can affect every aspect of life including physical, mental, social, fertility and psychosexual health.

Mr Ahmed El Gohari is a gynaecologist and a specialist in endometriosis, pelvic pain, and complex gynaecological surgeries. He is the lead for endometriosis at the Trust.
