Frequently asked questions

Is the patient portal secure?

The portal is compliant with the NHS network, so it’s just as secure as the information healthcare providers already hold about you. However, it’s unique because it also gives you access to your information.

Patient information is encrypted (coded) and only people who have permission to view your information can do so.

We encrypt data in transit (i.e. when the information comes in and out) and storage.

Find out more including how your data is protected.

How do I get access to the patient portal?

You can register via the NHS app or use our  step by step guide on how to register.

Find out more about  other ways to register  (e.g. letter invite, SMS or email).

What if I don't have an NHS login?

If you do not have an NHS login, don’t worry. You will be prompted to create one after entering your email from the NHS sign in page. If you do not have the NHS App, you can download it.

Managing a patient portal for someone else

You may wish to nominate someone you trust – such as a family member or carer – to help you. This is sometimes called having a linked profile or having proxy access.

If you need help you can email mtw.tr-patientportalsupport@nhs.net

Parents and guardians can now use the portal to securely access their child’s health records, giving families more control and involvement in care.

Patient portal access request for a parent or carer

Once access is approved, you will get email notifications about letters and can complete questionnaires to support your child’s care. A  ‘how to’ guide  is also available to help you use the portal.

What information can I see using the portal?

Patients can access clinic letters, some questionnaires and radiology results. Pathology results will be available soon.

Radiology (CT, MRI and X-ray) results

You can use the portal to view imaging reports – such as X-rays, CT scans, and MRIs – quickly and securely online.

In line with national guidance from NHS England, radiology reports are released with a 28-day delay from the time the report is authorised by reporting clinician. This allows for appropriate clinical review.

To access your results, simply select the Health tab on the portal, followed by Imaging.

If I don't use the patient portal will it affect my care?

If you decide not to use the patient portal this will not affect the care you receive.

It’s designed to improve your care and experience, help you to be more involved in decisions, get better explanations from us, and give you the tools to manage your care safely at home.

Why does my welcome message show a different NHS trust?

Your welcome page displays a message from the first healthcare organisation that became connected to your record in the Patients Know Best platform.

There are a number of local NHS trusts using this platform to provide patient portal services and you may have previously received care from them, or may still be a patient there too.

You will still see appointments and other details that we share with you via the portal, even if the welcome screen shows another trust.

Any data, letters and results are clearly marked with their source in your patient portal record. If you receive data from us, the notification email will clearly state that it has come from MTW.

You can check which other healthcare organisations are connected to your record under ‘Sharing > Professional’. You have full control over your records and if you do not want your records to be connected to a particular trust, you can revoke their access.

Who can I contact if I have questions?
