Trust highly commended at national patient safety awards

Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust (MTW) has been highly commended at this year's HSJ Patient Safety Awards for an innovative project using real-time data to improve patient safety.

The national awards set the benchmark for best practice in patient safety, recognising individuals and teams who are improving outcomes and experience across health and care.

This year’s awards saw 217 shortlisted entries reach the final stage, following a rigorous judging process.

The Trust was recognised in the Advancing Patient Safety with Data Analytics category for its project ‘Real-time lying and standing blood pressure analytics to reduce inpatient falls and improve patient safety’.

The project involved the development of a real-time dashboard to improve visibility of lying and standing blood pressure assessments, supporting the earlier identification of patients at risk of postural hypotension (a sudden drop in blood pressure) and helping to reduce avoidable inpatient falls.

Speaking about the Trust’s high commendation, Falls Prevention Lead, Adrian Lachainer, said: “This recognition reflects the collaborative work between our clinical and informatics teams to improve patient safety through the use of data. It is fantastic to see this work recognised nationally and to know it is making a difference for our patients.”

Deputy Chief Nurse, Richard Gatune, said: “Congratulations to everyone involved in this achievement. This project is a great example of how teams across the Trust are using data and technology to continuously develop our services and support patient safety. This national recognition highlights the impact that innovation and collaboration can have in enhancing the quality of care we provide to our patients.”
