“Thank you, Becky and Karen for helping me to stay healthy”

Visiting hospital can be overwhelming and for people with learning disabilities, there can be extra challenges.

That was the case for Sophie, who needs regular blood tests and had been finding it difficult to come in to hospital.

Karen, one of our phlebotomists, worked with Learning Disability Liaison Nurse, Becky Hankin to help Sophie build her confidence so she can access the services she needs.

Hello, my name is Sophie. I live in Tunbridge Wells in a nice apartment. A team of carers look after me and help me to be as independent as possible. I am 34 years old and when I was younger, I went to college in Cheltenham. That was the best time ever!

I like doing lots of different things especially going out to the pub, sailing and going to a day centre near Sevenoaks where I have made new friends.

I like watching films, swimming and listening to West Life.  I don’t like very loud noises, the smell of oranges and...blood tests!

The first time I needed to have a blood test I just didn’t want to go...and so I didn’t.

The doctor said I needed to have a blood test to help me to stay healthy.  I tried many times with help from my carers and family, but I just wasn’t brave enough. Then one day I met nurse Becky who introduced me to another nurse (the one with the needle!) and they were able to explain everything to me and reassure me that everything would be ok. And it was!

We always meet up with the same people in the same room, and I feel like we know each other. They were very kind and patient and I became more confident. The last time I had a blood test it was easy and I was hardly worried at all.

Thank you, Becky and Karen (needle lady) for helping me to stay healthy.
