Contraception (including emergency)

We offer all methods of oral and injectable contraception such as pills, patch, ring and injections, including insertion and removal of long acting reversible conceptions (LARC) methods such as implants and coils and deep implant removal.

To book an appointment to discuss or request contraception, call 0300 373 0709.

Emergency contraception

If you need advice about emergency contraception, please contact us as soon as possible on 0300 373 0709.

We offer all methods of emergency contraception, but the copper coil (IUD) is the most effective option – more than 99.9% effective at preventing pregnancy in this situation.

It can sometimes be fitted several days after the episode of unprotected sex and is offered at all of our clinics.

If the copper coil is the most suitable method for you or your chosen option, you will be assessed to check the timing is appropriate before your appointment for insertion.

We provide the hormonal emergency contraceptive pill in all our clinics, but you can also access this, usually free of charge, from many pharmacies.

Pharmacies near you who provide emergency contraception, their location and contact number so you can call ahead and check they can help, are on the NHS website.

The NHS also has information on emergency contraception and which methods are available.

Remember, if you have had unprotected sex, as well as pregnancy you may also be at risk of acquiring a sexually transmitted infection.

You can get free STI screening delivered to your address by registering with www.kent.sh.uk.

If you are under 25, you can access free condoms by registering at getit.org.uk/kent.

Coil procedures

The Rubin Clinic is only able to provide coils for contraception. This form is not for women wanting an IUCD for the treatment of gynaecological problems, e.g. to reduce heavy menstrual bleeding or for perimenopausal symptoms as part of your hormone replacement therapy.

If you need a coil for this reason, please contact your GP to have your procedure or be referred to a gynaecologist as we will be unable to do this for you.

The duration of use for the Mirena, Benilexa and Levosert coils has been updated. They are now known to be effective for contraception for eight years if inserted before the age of 45.

This means these coils only need to be replaced if they were inserted eight years ago or more, if used for contraception. If used for HRT purposes, the guidance remains the same and they should be replaced after five years by your GP or by Gynaecology.

We use the BENILEXA 8 year hormonal coil. All three of the 8 year hormonal coils mentioned above are identical and approved or licensed for the same duration and the same uses. They are simply from different manufacturers.

We cannot guarantee to be able to provide you with a branded “Mirena”, so if you will not accept the Benilexa, please ask your GP for a prescription for a “Mirena” and bring the unopened box with you to your appointment for us to fit.

An IUD (copper coil) fitted at, or after, the age of 40 does not need replacing and will be effective for contraception until 1-2 years after your last ever period. This is usually around the age of 50-51 years.

52mg LNG-IUD (Mirena/Levosert/Benilexa – 8 year hormonal coil) fitted at or after the age of 45 will be effective for contraception without the need for an exchange until the age of 55. At 55, it can safely be removed without further risk of pregnancy

Kyleena and Jaydess hormonal coils still need to be replaced at five and three years from insertion, respectively.

For your safety, we ask children are not brought to your appointment.

If your child’s behaviour is distracting and prevents us from performing the procedure safely, your doctor/nurse may refuse to carry out your procedure. We are unlikely to have sufficient staff to mind your child during your appointment.

If bringing your child is unavoidable, please bring a pushchair or buggy into which they can be securely strapped, and ensure they are accompanied by an adult who will be able to care for them in the waiting area during the appointment.

Please let us know ahead of your appointment if your child will be attending with you.

If you need any type of coil removed, or inserted or exchanged for contraception, please complete the relevant form and follow the instructions:

Coil insertion

Coil exchange

Coil removal

Once you have returned the form, we will be in touch within 14 days to book your appointment. Please email mtw-tr.coilassessmentdoc@nhs.net  if you don’t hear from us within 14 days of submitting your form.

If you can’t complete the form online, appointments are available by calling the clinic on  0300 373 0709. You may need a telephone assessment before being offered an appointment for your procedure.

Implant procedures

Please book all implant procedures (insertion, exchange and removal) directly with a member of our team by calling  0300 373 0709.

Ideally, children should not come to your appointment but we understand sometimes this is unavoidable.

If your child does come with you, please make sure they are in a pushchair or buggy that they can be securely strapped into, or they are accompanied by an adult who will be able to care for them during the appointment.

Nexaplanon implant

We use the Nexaplanon implant, currently the only progestogen-only contraceptive subdermal implant available in the UK.

The implant is a highly effective long-acting reversible method of contraception, lasting for five years.

There has been a recent change to the licence for Nexplanon, extending its use from three years to five years.

If your device is a "Nexaplanon" it will be effective for contraception for five years from the date of insertion and does not need to be exchanged earlier than this.
