About
Professor Ejaz Ansari FRCOphth MD, is a national award-winning consultant with more than 30 years’ experience in clinical ophthalmology and research.
He is lead glaucoma surgeon in the Department of Ophthalmology and, after extensive training in the UK and internationally, was appointed as a consultant in 2001.
He completed a highly regarded glaucoma fellowship at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London.
Subsequently, as an International Glaucoma Association Fellow, he also completed an MD, with a thesis focused on the early detection of glaucoma.
Clinical expertise
His expertise includes modern micro-incision cataract surgery (MICS) using phacoemulsification, supported by extensive experience in advanced intraocular lens technology, including accommodative, and multifocal lenses.
His glaucoma treatments include trabeculectomy, glaucoma tube and valve implantation, Preserflo microshunt surgery, and laser treatments such as YAG, ALT, SLT and cyclodiode laser.
He has an international reputation in minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS), including XEN Gel Stent, KDB, MiniJect and iStent implantation.
He also provides a general ophthalmology service covering a wide range of adult, paediatric and emergency eye conditions.
Research and teaching
Professor Ansari is Director of Postgraduate Ophthalmology Studies at Canterbury Christ Church University and has taught many doctors from the UK and overseas, helping to prepare them for careers in NHS clinical ophthalmology.
He is actively involved in clinical trials at the Trust’s eye research unit and has published more than 100 peer-reviewed scientific papers. His research includes new treatments for glaucoma and dry eye, laser therapies and MIGS. He also lectures widely in the UK and internationally.
Training
In addition to training resident doctors for more than 20 years, he supports the training of allied healthcare professionals in hospital and community settings, helping to expand timely patient care amid growing clinical demand. He advises local clinical commissioning groups on community-based eye care schemes and has also advised the Central London group of eye commissioners.
