Due to ongoing staffing shortages we have taken the difficult decision to temporarily pause births at Crowborough Birthing Centre from 2 October until May 2026. Community antenatal and postnatal services, including parent education classes and the Infant Feeding Café, will continue at the centre as normal. There will be no inpatient facility at Crowborough Birthing Centre.
While we know this will be disappointing news for the people who are affected, our priority is to provide safe, high-quality and reliable maternity care for families and we are working with partners across Kent and Sussex to look at how we deliver a long-term, sustainable service.
We remain committed to ensuring women and birthing people have choice and our services at Tunbridge Wells Hospital and Maidstone Birth Centre, both of which offer high-quality midwifery-led care with access to birthing pools, reflect our dedication to personalised care which supports each person’s preferences. Home births may also be option following a home birth assessment.
Neighbouring facilities at other trusts are also available, including the Princess Royal Hospital at Haywards Heath and the Eastbourne Midwifery Unit at Eastbourne District General Hospital.
Maternity service at Tunbridge Wells Hospital rated ‘good’ by Care Quality Commission.
In an inspection in October 2024, the CQC found “significant improvements” had been made since its previous inspection in August 2023.
This followed an extensive programme of improvement addressing areas including: management of post-partum haemorrhage; maternity triage processes; category 1 and 2 c-section waiting times; staffing ratios; and improvements in data capture and reporting.
The CQC’s new report recognises a range of improvements, including:
-
- Strengthened oversight and management of governance
- A positive safety culture where incidents are investigated thoroughly, and learning is embedded to promote good practice and outcomes
- Routine monitoring of care and treatment to continuously improve outcomes for mothers and babies
- A culture of kindness and compassion, with staff making sure people’s care, support and treatment meet individual needs and preferences
- Improved focus on equality, diversity and inclusion, and personalised care plans based on individual needs and preferences for all women and birthing people.
