Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust is a research active trust. Research is carried out across a wide range of specialties by many of our staff. Last year, over 2,000 people were offered a place on a research study.
The Trust’s research programme is a balanced portfolio of commercial (industry), NIHR portfolio and own account research projects. Projects undertaken include observational, interventional, proof of concept and case studies. Whilst traditionally research was led by consultant staff, increasingly, non medical and support staff are taking on the role of both chief and principle investigators.
This portfolio helps to support increasingly balanced research funding allowing for greater investment in the Trust’s research infrastructure, be that personnel, equipment or staff development and training.
How we can help
- Research Governance Team – Probably the first team you need to contact when you want to join an existing trial or design your own. The Research Governance Team provide support for researchers in project design, set up, ethical review, resourcing, financing and achieving NHS approval.
- Research Nurse Team – the Research Nurse Team provide advice and guidance on research set up (feasibility) and recruitment. They are also responsible for recruiting patients to studies and working closely with research leads.
- Research Supporting Services Team – there is an ever growing team of research support staff available to help you with your project. The team currently consists of research physiotherapists, a microbiologist and pharmacists.
The Research and Development Department is based on the Maidstone site and the oncology clinical trials unit is also based at Maidstone in the Kent Oncology Centre. Research activity takes place across both Tunbridge Wells and Maidstone hospitals as well as in our satellite clinics that are held in other hospitals and clinics in other areas.
The central team consists of a governance department and a nursing service that both set up and deliver research projects. We provide support to all research staff from early research ideas through to the opening of studies. The department can also signpost you to other support services such as the Kent-based Research Design Service and our local statistician to help you to develop your project.
