Professional Profile

Mr Osama Mikdad Tawfiq is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon with special interest in Lower Limb complex trauma and arthroplasty surgery. He performs high volume trauma procedures including hip fractures, periprosthetic fractures, joint arthroplasty for high risk patients like total hip replacement for patients with hip fractures, complex trauma around the knee joint, knee arthroplasty and knee arthroscopy surgery.

He qualified from Mosul University College of Medicine and completed his Foundation Programme in South Wales in 2008. In 2011 he completed his Basic Surgical Training in Merseyside Deanery where he was trained in The Walton Centre, Alder Hey and Royal Liverpool University hospitals.

During his higher surgical training, he joined Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust in 2013 as part of the Southeast London deanery training programme where he developed his surgical experience in trauma and orthopaedic surgery. During this period, he also completed his Master’s in Health Science (Trauma and Orthopaedics) under the supervision of Professor Matt Costa and Andy Metcalf.

In 2017 he was the inaugural Hip and Lower Limb Trauma Fellow where he developed his surgical experience, in particular in complex trauma procedures and arthroplasty surgery including hip and knee arthroplasty surgery. His practice focusses on patient safety and quality improvement for which he has had excellent feedback from patients, colleagues and hospital staff.

He has published in several peer-reviewed journals and has also presented at national and international orthopaedic meetings in Vienna, Copenhagen and Istanbul.

He is keen to teach junior trainees and he is a faculty member of Royal College of Surgeon of England on Systematic Training in Acute illness Recognition and Treatment (START) course.
