Professional Profile

Mr Ahfat qualified in medicine from Leeds University (Gold Medal) in 1989 and completed his postgraduate training in ophthalmology at Leeds, Southampton, Liverpool and Moorfields Eye Hospital, London.

He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists 1994 and has a retinal fellowship at Moorfields with Professors Bird and Lightman.

Mr Ahfat was appointed consultant ophthalmic surgeon at Maidstone & Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust in 2000, with special interest in retinal disease.

He is an ophthalmology member National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) and Lead for Kent & Medway Comprehensive Local Research Network 2010-14. In addition he is a current examiner and former College Tutor, Royal College of Ophthalmologists and expert reference panel member of Health Technology Adoption programme (HTAP) of the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE).

Mr Ahfat is also a panel member and reviewer for NIHR Evaluation Trials & Studies Coordinating Centre (NETSCC) and principal investigator for several national and international clinical trials and studies.  His current areas of research are diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration.
