Professional Profile
Dr Aswin Ajit Kumar was born in Kent, a ‘Third Culture Kid’ to a very medical family of Indian origin – he is part of the fourth generation of medical doctors in his family – and spent his childhood in various counties of England and the Republic of Ireland before completing high school in the United Arab Emirates.
After placing within the top 0.1% of candidates in the All India Medical Entrance Exams, Dr Ajit Kumar began his medical training at Trivandrum Medical College in Kerala, India in 2001.
He returned to the UK in 2007 and completed Foundation Training, Core Medical Training and a Locum Appointment for Training programme in the Mersey, North Western and Welsh deaneries before starting specialist training in London.
He spent several years working at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, the Royal Marsden Hospital, and the Royal Surrey County Hospital before completing specialist training in 2020 and achieving membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) and fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists (FRCR).
He worked as a consultant for a year at the Royal Surrey County Hospital learning advanced radiotherapy techniques including stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SABR), treating lymphomas, thoracic malignancies, and upper GI cancers.
This was followed by three years at the North Middlesex University Hospital (now part of the Royal Free London Group) where he managed breast cancers, lung cancers, and jointly managed the Acute Oncology service.
Dr Ajit Kumar is passionate about expanding acute oncology services across Kent to improve the experience of patients who attend out of hours or as an emergency.
Outside work, his interests and hobbies include glass painting, clay modelling, jewellery making, resin casting and gardening. He is also a keen baker, specialising in fusion creations of Indian and Western flavours in addition to more traditional cakes and patisserie.
