Mr Douglas Donnachie, a resident doctor in orthopaedics, has won the top research poster prize at a major international orthopaedic meeting in France.
Mr Donnachie’s research, which took place at MTW, shows hand X-rays are a fast, inexpensive adjunct to DEXA scans in evaluating bone health and fracture risk in patients with clinical risk factors.
The results of the research, led by Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Mr David Bodansky and Consultant Rheumatologist, Dr Pamela Leventis, will improve care for patients by allowing them to start treatment earlier, avoiding life-threatening fractures.
EFORT, the European Federation of National Associations of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, links Europe’s national orthopaedic associations and has member societies from 39 countries.
The most significant cross-border medical meeting in Europe dedicated to orthopaedics and traumatology, it enables the exchange of knowledge and advancements in this area of medicine.
The theme for the 2025 congress was “Modern Technologies in Orthopaedics: Challenging Ethics & Outcomes”, reflecting the rapid technological advancement taking place in orthopaedics and the implications of this for clinical practice and education.
