A project designed to reduce food waste in hospitals has been shortlisted for a national award.

Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust (MTW) has been shortlisted in the ‘Food waste initiative of the year’ category at the Let’s Recycle Awards for Excellence in Recycling and Waste Management, which celebrates outstanding progress in environmental progress and sustainable practice.

The shortlisted scheme, which introduced food waste segregation across the Maidstone Hospital and Tunbridge Wells Hospital, helped identify a range of measures to reduce food waste, including training for food service assistants.

In just five months, the Trust has reduced food waste by 18% and increased recycling by 17%.

Food waste contributes significantly to climate change, and is estimated to account for approximately 6% of the NHS’ carbon footprint. Managing food waste and ensuring waste is separated correctly helps to reduce greenhouse gases, and makes waste management more efficient, saving valuable NHS resources and supporting the Trust’s Green Plan commitment to reducing its environmental impact.

MTW prepares over 820,000 meals per year for patients, staff and visitors. By analysing food consumption and stock practices, the Trust has reduced food waste and associated costs.

Award winners will be announced next month.
