Professional Profile
Dr Barnes qualified from Charing Cross & Westminster Medical School in 1986 and carried out his specialist training at Guy’s Hospital. He has been a Consultant Physician with an interest in Diabetes & Endocrinology at the Kent & Sussex and Pembury Hospitals and subsequently MTW since 1996. He was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians in 2001.
He was Clinical Lead in Diabetes & Endocrinology at MTW from 2007 to 2012 and has broad experience in all general areas of Diabetes & Endocrinology. He has previously been Chairman of the Trust’s Drugs & Therapeutics Committee and has also served on various committees over the years relating to local and regional Diabetes Networks.
He has helped to develop a number of local specialist diabetes services, including the largest continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion pump therapy service in a single centre in Kent.
His research interests have been in diabetic kidney disease and he remains a member of the European Diabetic Nephropathy Study Group. He is actively involved in research and is the Principal Investigator of the ADDRESS-2 study in type 1 diabetes at MTW.
Dr Barnes is also actively involved in medical education and is a regular contributor to multi-professional meetings, both internally at MTW but also externally. He is an MRCP PACES Examiner. He was appointed Joint Leadership Tutor at MTW in 2014. He is a member of Diabetes UK and the European Association for the Study of Diabetes.
