Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust (MTW) has become part of a sustainability scheme to recycle and reuse walking aids.

Patients can now return crutches, elbow crutches, metal walking sticks and walking frames after use.

Returned items will be checked, cleaned, refurbished and reused for future patients where appropriate. MTW is working in partnership with WheelEasy, a local CIC, on the recycling process.

The new scheme will help the Trust to reduce its carbon footprint and save valuable NHS resources.

Jane Duffy, Clinical Director for Therapies, said: “Walking aids often play a key role in helping patients recover from illness, build their independence and support mobility. Our new recycling scheme helps reduce our carbon emissions and save NHS resources, making it a sustainable way for us to provide patients with the equipment they need.”

Walking aids can be returned to the following locations:

  • Fordcombe Hospital, Reception
  • Maidstone Hospital – Main Reception, opposite the Security office
  • Tunbridge Wells Hospital – Main Reception
