Volunteers’ Week 2020, which runs from Monday 1 to Sunday 7 June, is a chance to recognise the millions of people across the UK who freely give their time, skills and expertise to volunteer in health and care services, as well their own communities, to help and support other people.

Almost 300 volunteers work in 10 departments across Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust. Ranging in age from 18 to 96 years young, some of our volunteers are clearly visible and others blend into the background unseen, but all bring with them, a wealth of life experience, care, dedication love and a warm smile.

To celebrate, we’ll be shining a light on some of our volunteers throughout the week by sharing their stories with you.

Today we introduce Julia Smallbone.

Where do you volunteer and what’s your role?

I am based in the Oncology department at Maidstone hospital, working with the admin team and helping on the oncology reception desk when needed. I volunteer four days per week at Maidstone Hospital.

What’s your background?

In normal times I work as a massage therapist, giving massages to clients who suffer from aches and pains, or need help relaxing. Prior to that I worked in marketing in the IT and manufacturing sectors.

How long have you been volunteering at MTW Trust?

I started in April 2020.

Why did you want to volunteer at MTW Trust?

I had to temporarily close my massage business due to Covid-19.  I wanted to spend my time being useful, although I didn’t have any good ideas how to go about it! So when I saw an advert for Covid-19 volunteers at MTW I applied straight away.

What do you like best about volunteering at MTW?

I like being able to help, whether that’s giving information to patients when they come for their appointments, or doing admin tasks for the secretaries and clinic co-ordinators. I’ve enjoyed working with some lovely people at MTW, and it’s been a great insight into how hospitals work behind the scenes.

What advice would you give to anyone considering volunteer work?
The people at MTW are very friendly and would make you very welcome, and it’s a great feeling to know that you’re helping in whatever way you can.
