What to expect

We will write to you to let you know the date of your operation or planned care.  If you are unable to attend on that day for any reason you must contact the Planned Care Office as soon as possible to arrange an alternative date.

Most patients are asked to come into the hospital on the day before their operation or planned care, but some patients are asked to come in on the morning of their operation instead.

The day before your operation or planned care

  1. You must telephone the Admissions Lounge around 1pm on the day before your operation or planned care to make sure that there is a bed available for you.  Contact via the switchboard on 0845 155 1000.
  2. Providing your bed is available you will be asked to come in to the Admissions Lounge from around 3pm onwards.
  3. If there is no bed available for you when you call, you may be asked to come in around 8am on the day of surgery instead.
  4. Sometimes there is a good chance that a bed will become available later on that day, in which case you will be asked to wait at home and come in to the Admissions Lounge later on.
  5. If you are to wait at home then you will be asked for a travelling time to the hospital.  Do not worry if you have a long way to travel.  This information is all taken into account when admitting you to the hospital.
  6. If you need transport to get to the hospital, please let our staff know as soon as possible so that they can arrange a lift with one of our voluntary drivers.

On the day of your operation or planned care

  1. You must not eat or drink anything from 3am onwards on the day of your operation or planned care.
  2. You must not take any medication, except blood pressure tablets, unless otherwise instructed by your doctor.
  3. If you have been asked to come in to the hospital on the day of your operation or planned care, then you must come in to the Admissions Lounge at 8am and let the staff know that you are waiting.
  4. If you need transport to get to the hospital, please let our staff know as soon as possible so that they can arrange a lift with one of our voluntary drivers.

If your operation is cancelled

If your operation has to be cancelled then the Planned Care Office will contact you to let you know the new date of your operation or planned care.
