Disclaimer

The activities suggested have been designed to cover a range of abilities and should not cause any harm.

Talk to a qualified physiotherapist or your GP before starting any new fitness regime, and if you experience pain or discomfort as a result of any of the exercises, stop immediately and speak to a health professional.

If the exercises here are not suitable for your capabilities, a physiotherapist will be able to provide you with a personalised programme of activity, tailored to your needs and lifestyle.

Your appointment

Your initial assessment may last up to 60 minutes and follow up treatment sessions may last up to 30 minutes.

Appointments are available between 8am and 5pm, Monday to Friday at Maidstone Hospital and Tunbridge Wells Hospital, with the option of video consultations and telephone consultations.

During your one-to-one appointment, you will assessed by a qualified physiotherapist who will:

  • Discuss your problem with you, asking questions about your symptoms and medical history
  • Conduct a thorough examination
  • Give you an explanation of your symptoms
  • Agree a plan on how to help you achieve your goals and your best possible outcome.

Treatment options

We have a range of treatment options to help you with your condition. These are based on research and clinical assessment, and we will discuss them with you and agree next steps.

This might include:

  • Advice and education
  • Exercise therapy
  • Class-based rehabilitation
  • Manual therapy
  • Aquatic therapy
  • Acupuncture

If for any reason you do not reach your expected outcomes, we may contact your GP or consultant to discuss whether further management is required.

What you can do to help with your treatment

During your first appointment, we will find out as much as possible about how your problem started and how it is affecting you.

  • We will discuss what your goals and concerns are. To help us properly assess your problem, think about what you would like to achieve from your treatment
  • We will ask your permission to remove some of your outer clothing so we can see the affected area and perform movements and tests on you. This will help us find the cause of your problem. You may feel more comfortable bringing a vest top and shorts to wear, depending on the location of your problem.
  • We will try and see you at the time on your appointment letter but some appointments do run over time. To help us keep to appointment times, please allow plenty of time to reach the hospital, park and get to the department for your appointment.
  • Please check which hospital your appointment is at before you start your journey.
  • If you can't make your appointment, please let us know by emailing mtw-tr.physiotherapy@nhs.net so we can offer your appointment to someone else.

If you miss your appointment without letting us know can't make it, you may be discharged from our service.

What to bring with you

  • A list of all the medication you're taking at the moment
  • If we gave you a form to fill in, please bring it with you
  • Think about what you would like to achieve from your treatment
  • Wear comfortable clothing. Please wear/bring shorts for a lower limb referral or a vest top for upper limb referrals, so we can see the affected area.
  • Arrive for your appointment on time.

Groups may not be with the physiotherapist who first assessed you.
