This is a department devoted to discovering by molecular techniques whether a patient with selected cancers is likely to respond to available drug treatments.
The department currently offers the following tests:
ALK rearrangement for lung cancer
Her2 for breast cancer
BRAF mutation for melanoma
Her2 for gastric cancer
EGFR mutation for lung cancer
|HPV (reflex test only)|
RAS mutation for colorectal cancer
Here at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust, we have been performing HER-2 immunohistochemistry and FISH since 2003 and currently test around 2500 breast cases per year with around 600 cases of in-situ hybridisation. We also test upper GI cases witht he Gastric HER-2 test.
We are one of 7 UK laboratories trained to interpret gastric HER-2 testing. This specialist supra-regional service is overseen by Dr Jyoti Gupta, Lead for Upper GI Pathology at MTW.
The Breast HER-2 testing service is overseen by Dr David Fish.
The molecular pathology department is managed by a Clinical Scientist (Gill Donald) together with dedicated scientific and clerical staff.
We are a fully accredited laboratory and fully participate in NEQAS schemes for both the HER-2 immunohistochemistry and FISH schemes for breast and gastric cancers.
Three members of consultant and scientific staff are NEQAS assessors. Consultant staff involved with the service are participating in the development of UK reporting guidelines for HER-2 testing.
